VAT Relief On Energy-Saving Materials

Following recent consultations, the UK government has broadened the scope of energy-saving materials (ESMs) eligible for VAT relief. Effective February, both retrofitted and standalone battery energy storage systems installed in residential properties will now qualify for VAT exemption. Previously, VAT relief for battery storage was limited to installations paired with other ESMs, such as solar panels. However, based on feedback received, the government acknowledges the significant role battery storage plays in reducing households' reliance on the grid. Consequently, all installations of home battery systems are now VAT exempt, whether integrated with a qualifying ESM or utilised as a standalone grid-connected technology. This adjustment reflects the government's commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions and empowering homeowners to embrace cleaner, more efficient technologies.
